The Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS)
integrates remote sensing and GIS technologies to deliver global MODIS hotspot/fire locations and burned area information to natural resource managers and other stakeholders around the World.

FIRMS is funded by NASA and builds
on Web Fire Mapper, a web mapping interface that displays hotspots/fires detected by the MODIS Rapid Response System and delivers near real-time hotspot/fire information and monthly burned area information to international users and support fire managers around the World.

The operational transition of the FIRMS system to FAO is now complete (May 19, 2011)
Operational users are advised to switch to the Global Fire Information Management System (GFIMS, http://www.fao.org/nr/gfims/en/) at FAO.

In July 2011, FIRMS will become part of NASA LANCE (Land Atmosphere Near real-time Capability for EOS, http://lance.nasa.gov/). LANCE provides access to near real-time data (less than 3 hours from observation) from MODIS, AMSR-E, AIRS and MLS instruments.

It is the intention that any enhancements made to FIRMS as part of LANCE will also be integrated into GFIMS.

Historical Fire Data Download Tool now available! (April 21, 2011)
FIRMS has developed an interactive download tool for Collection 5 historical archived active fire data. Please visit the Fire Archive Download Tool page to make a request for historical fire data in your area of interest.

FAO launches the Global Fire Information Management System (August 11, 2010)
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization recently launched the Global Fire Information Management System (GFIMS). GFIMS will become part of the operational monitoring systems at FAO and will complement their existing suite of projects that deliver near real time information to ongoing monitoring and emergency projects, to other UN organizations as well as providing information to the general public.
